A Chiang Mai elephant sanctuary with no riding, ever

[ตรวจสอบ: ถ้าลูกค้าอนุมัติ H1 ใหม่ข้างต้น ให้เปลี่ยน H2 นี้เป็น 'What no riding, no shows means at Lakerpor Elephant' เพื่อไม่ให้หัวข้อซ้ำกัน]

No one rides our elephants, for any reason, including photos. The elephants never perform, and nothing is staged for an audience. Your time is spent alongside them: watching how they move, eat, wash and rest, and learning about them from the mahouts who look after them. You can read more about our welfare approach on our About the sanctuary page.

One mahout for every elephant

Each elephant has its own mahout. A mahout spends day after day with one elephant and learns its moods, its favourite foods and the spots on the hillside it likes best. When you walk with the herd, the mahouts let you know when to step closer and when to give an elephant space. Small groups

We keep groups small, so everyone has time to feed the elephants and ask the mahouts questions. A smaller group is also quieter, which is better for the elephants.

What you'll do instead of riding

A visit without riding is built around three things: preparing food and feeding the elephants, walking with them, and time by the water, which you'll find in the waterfall section below.

Preparing food and feeding the elephants

Elephants spend much of the day eating, so feeding them is a natural way to meet them. With the mahouts, you help get the food ready and then offer it to the elephants by hand. You'll see that each one has its own pace and preferences, and how gently a trunk can take food from your palm. Walking alongside the herd on the hillside

You also walk with the elephants and their mahouts across the hillside, keeping to the elephants' pace. Along the way you can watch them stop to browse, wander off the path or call to one another. Wear shoes you're happy to get muddy.

A sanctuary with its own waterfall

There is a multi-tier natural waterfall inside the sanctuary grounds, and time by the water is part of every programme. [

When to visit: Chiang Mai's seasons

Chiang Mai generally has three seasons, and each changes the feel of a day outdoors. The cool, dry months, roughly November to February, usually bring clear skies, comfortable daytime temperatures and chilly early mornings in the hills, so a light layer is useful. The hot season, roughly March to May, can be very warm in the middle of the day, and the region is often hazy in the early part of the year, so time in the shade and by the water is welcome. The rainy season, roughly June to October, turns the hills green and usually makes streams and waterfalls run fuller, with paths that can be slippery and muddy. Whatever month you come, the waterfall will look a little different.

What to wear and bring for the water

Generally, quick-drying clothes you don't mind getting wet or muddy work best, along with sandals or shoes that grip on wet rock. It's also worth bringing swimwear to wear under your clothes, a change of clothes, a small towel, sunscreen, insect repellent and a reusable water bottle. Leave valuables at your hotel, and keep your phone in a dry bag if you plan to be near the water.

Choose your visit

Every visit includes time with the herd. The programmes differ in length and in what else the day includes, and each one has its own page on our site with full details.

Half-day morning and half-day afternoon

Our half-day visits (morning or afternoon) are the shortest, a good fit if you're short on time. On the half-day morning you feed the herd, walk with a mahout and visit the waterfall. Full-day experience

The full day gives you more time with the elephants. You feed them and walk with them, have lunch out in nature, and swim at the waterfall. It suits travellers who'd like a whole day at the sanctuary without planning every hour themselves.

Care, trek, waterfall and bamboo raft

This full day goes beyond the sanctuary. You care for the elephants, cool off at the waterfall, trek to a Karen village and finish by drifting on a bamboo raft. It's a good pick if you'd like to see more of the countryside around Chiang Mai in one day.

How we care for the elephants

Why we chose a no-riding sanctuary

We believe the best way to know an elephant is to stand beside it. The longer story of how the sanctuary works, and who works here, is on the About the sanctuary page linked above.

A calm day for the elephants, every day

Each visit is arranged around the herd's day, not the other way round. The mahouts stay close to the elephants they know, and if an elephant would rather wander off and graze, we let it.
